Position Description


Dodge Nature Center and Preschool is a nonprofit organization providing quality environmental education programs on its 460+ acre nature preserve in West St. Paul, Mendota Heights, and Cottage Grove. Dodge has a nature-based preschool (Dodge Nature Preschool) on the Main Property in West St. Paul.

The Naturalist/Elementary Liaison will cater to a broad audience, providing enriching environmental and outdoor education experiences for numerous individuals annually, including school field trips, outreach programming, public programs, and events. This involves engaging diverse groups ranging from Pre-K to seniors in various natural history, environmental, and agricultural subjects. This position will focus on delivering environmental education to elementary schools within the South Washington County School District.

This is an in-person role primarily based out of offices at our Shepard Farm Property in Cottage Grove.

Job Functions and Key Responsibilities


Effective Environmental Education
  • Instruct children and adults in environmental and agricultural education programs.
  • Design and oversee camp programs, taking a lead role in their implementation.
  • Create and execute public programs, including hosting birthday parties.
  • Spearhead after-school and outreach programs.
  • Support special events, seasonal initiatives, animal care, restoration projects, and maintenance of program equipment and materials.
  • Provide visitor services by working with the public and volunteers to answer questions (in person and via phone), regarding the organization, trails, local wildlife, etc.
High-quality Partnership Program with South Washington County Schools
  • Deliver consistent and high-caliber environmental education sessions on a weekly basis to students in grades K-5 at Crestview Elementary.
  • Work closely with teachers to co-create and integrate environmental education components into the curriculum across all grade levels, aligning with established educational objectives.
  • Conduct professional development sessions to equip staff with relevant environmental education content and teaching strategies.
  • Engage in grade-level meetings as necessary to collaboratively plan and coordinate with teachers.

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
  1. Educational Background: Bachelor’s Degree in natural sciences, natural resources, education, or a related field.
  2. Work Experience: At least four years of experience in environmental education. Demonstrated capability to effectively engage diverse audiences, particularly elementary school students, in outdoor settings.
  3. Physical Requirements: Proficiency in manual labor tasks, including lifting and transporting objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and flexibility to bend as necessary. Ability to navigate uneven terrain and withstand outdoor conditions for up to six hours per day, regardless of weather conditions.
  4. Driver’s License: Possession of a valid and current driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. Licensing: Hold a current Minnesota Teaching License (Elementary).
  2. Effective Communication: Proficiently communicate with diverse audiences on a wide range of topics.
  3. Passion for Nature: Display a demonstrated interest in and comprehensive understanding of the natural world.
  4. Animal Experience: Possess experience utilizing Minnesota-native reptiles and amphibians, raptors, farm livestock, and honeybees in environmental education programs.
  5. Language Proficiency: Fluent in spoken and written Spanish.
