Girls Explore Science: Artistic and Scientific

  • An event every week at 4:00pm on Wednesday, starting November 2, 2022 and repeating until November 30, 2022

Science is truly a work of art! In this series, try your hand at four different arts and crafts projects and learn about the science behind each one. Use sunlight to make beautiful prints. Learn what’s really happening when you burn a candle, then melt some wax and pour your own. Learn how to make your own dyes and create a tie-dyed masterpiece. Wander the forest and collect buckthorn wood to cut and shape into beautiful creations. You’ll soon learn why science and art go hand in hand!

Girls, female-identifying, and non-binary youth in grades 5-8 are welcome to participate. This is an after-school program that meets once a week for four weeks.

Scholarships are available for those who qualify.

Preregistration is required. Registration typically closes the day before the program at 12 p.m. Program fees are final and transfers are not permitted.

Program Dates & Themes

November 2 – Week 1: Solar Printing
In this session, create a light-sensitive dye by mixing two nontoxic chemicals together. Gather natural materials like leaves and grasses and get creative to design a one-of-a-kind work of art. Watch as the sunlight develops your print right before your eyes!

November 9 – Week 2: Candle-making
This week, learn all about the different types of wax used in candle-making, and why wax is used in the first place. Learn different methods of candle-making and try your hand at making your very own candle to take home.

November 16 – Week 3: Natural Dyes
Tie-dye is back in style, but this time with a natural twist! Create natural dyes using a variety of common grocery store produce. Learn about the process of preparing fabric and creating dye, then make your own tie-dye tote!

November 30 – Week 4: Woodworking
Combine conservation with craftsmanship this week in this lesson about basic woodworking. Cut down invasive buckthorn and use the wood to create unique handcrafted items using files, sandpaper, saws, drills, and other tools.
