Girls Explore Science – After-school Program: Outdoor Skills
An event every week at 4:00pm on Wednesday, starting May 11, 2022 and repeating until June 1, 2022
Let’s launch our scientific and technical skills in the fields, forest and archery range at Dodge. You’ll tool around with simple machines, engineer blazing bonfires, and go back in time to the technology of the Stone Age. Come give archery a shot and get your burning questions answered!
Girls Explore Science is an after-school program for female-identifying or non-binary youth in grades 5-8 that meets once a week for four weeks.
Program Dates & Themes
May 11 – Week 1: Girls Explore Fire Building I
Building a good fire is a science and an art. You’ll use the physics of friction and the chemistry of combustion as you try different techniques to start and kindle your fire. From flint and steel to bow drills, you’ll test it all!
May 18 – Week 2: Girls Explore Axes and Atlatls
Axe throwing has become a trendy outdoor recreation activity in recent years. Turns out, understanding the science behind a good toss can really help improve your skills! After axes, try your hand at throwing the ancient spear-throwing tool called an atlatl. You’ll understand how physics has helped humans throughout history to improve their hunting ability.
May 25 – Week 3: Girls Explore Archery
Let’s fly from atlatls to bows and arrows! This week, head to the archery range and learn how simple machines are used to create compound bows. Practice your archery skills and see how close you can get to a bullseye!
June 1 – Week 4: Girls Explore Fire Building II
It’s the end of the school year, and time to recognize all that we’ve learned at Girls Explore Science. Use your fire building skills to start a festive fire, then cook up treats to celebrate the friendships and knowledge we’ve gained at Dodge!
COVID-19 Safety
This program will be held mostly outdoors, with CDC and MN Department of Health procedures in place. Based on current guidelines and community levels, face masks are optional for all participants and staff. Dodge continues to monitor COVID-19 levels to determine our masking policy.
