Girls Explore Science: After-school Program (Fall 2021)

Calling all girls—let’s take science outside! In these programs, you will discover many branches of science through hands-on activities in the great outdoors. Learn what makes science so exciting and imagine your future careers while you explore the beautiful trails of Dodge Nature Center.

Girls Explore Science is an after-school program for female-identifying or non-binary youth in grades 5-8 that meets once a week for five weeks.

Scholarships are available to those who qualify.

Program Dates & Themes


September 29 – Week 1: Girls Explore Insects
What’s the buzz about insects? Find out in this week’s exploration into the world of entomology! Embark on an insect safari in Dodge’s prairie and woods. Get up close and personal with bugs to observe amazing adaptations and fascinating behaviors. Learn why such small creatures make a big difference in our world. It’s sure to bee a good time!

October 6 – Week 2: Girls Explore Reptiles and Amphibians
Slither, hop, or splash into this week’s exploration of herpetology! Hike the property to search for wild reptiles and amphibians, then head to the animal lab to visit with Dodge’s team of animal ambassadors. Handle snakes, turtles and frogs and find out what these animals do to survive when the weather turns cold. It’s going to be turtle-y awesome!

October 13 – Week 3: Girls Explore Forestry
How do you identify a dogwood tree? By its bark, of course! But seriously, how do you identify a tree? Find out this week in our exploration of forestry. Hike the property and identify common Minnesota trees. Learn why leaves change in the fall and model a forest fire to learn how proper forest management can help prevent wildfires.

October 20 – Week 4: Girls Explore Geology
Don’t take rocks for granite! This week, explore the world of geology by taking a closer look at how rocks are formed and reformed in the rock cycle. Hike around Dodge to identify signs of erosion and weathering in progress. Take a whack with the rock hammer to check out what’s hidden inside some “ordinary” rocks.

October 27 – Week 5: Girls Explore Nocturnal Animals
Halloween is just around the corner, and that means its time to learn owl about nature’s night life. Go batty and explore how bats and other nocturnal animals use sound to navigate the night. Get up close and personal with live nocturnal animals, including Dodge’s very own ambassador Barred owl. It’s sure to be a hoot!

COVID-19 Safety


This program will be held primarily outdoors, with CDC and MN Department of Health procedures in place. Amid the spread of the Delta variant, face masks are required for all participants and staff while indoors, and any outdoor activities where a physical distance of 6 feet cannot be maintained outside of your immediate family group.
