An event every week at 3:30pm on Monday, starting November 9, 2020 and repeating until December 7, 2020
Calling all girls—let’s take science outside! Join naturalist Mary for four weeks of hands-on science exploration at Dodge. Each week, you'll spend an hour and a half focusing on different scientific disciplines. Fly into the world of birds, cook up some delicious chemistry, navigate the night sky, and shine a light on some of nature’s true colors. Make sure to dress for the weather as these classes are all outdoors.
Girls Explore Science is an after-school program for girls in grades 5-8 that meets once a week for four weeks. There are two sessions offered. Please only register your child for one session:
- Mondays (November 9, November 16, November 30, and December 7)
- Wednesdays (November 11, November 18, December 2, and December 9)
Payment is only required once for this series of classes. Preregistration is required.
November 9 - Week 1: Girls Explore Ornithology
Science takes flight in this in-depth look at the world of birds. Learn how to identify several common Minnesota bird species and hone your birding skills with our bird zip line! You’ll explore avian adaptations for survival and find out why some birds stay in Minnesota year-round while others fly south.
November 16 - Week 2: Girls Explore Chemistry
Campfires, cooking and… chemistry? You got that right! Science gets delicious in this week’s exploration of cooking chemistry. Find out why your marshmallow turns golden brown and what makes popcorn pop. Discover what makes foods taste salty, sweet, sour or bitter. Put your taste buds to the test to see why the same food can taste very different to someone else.
November 30 - Week 3: Girls Explore Astronomy
The moon is full, and the science is bright as we launch into studying of the night sky! You’ll identify several constellations and discover how people (and possibly animals) have used stars to navigate for thousands of years. Let’s learn legends of the moon and stars from all around the globe, too. It’s going to be out of this world!
December 7 - Week 4: Girls Explore Fluorescence
Sometimes something as commonplace as a rock or a squirrel can be hiding some colorful secrets! Grab an ultraviolet flashlight and uncover the world of fluorescence. Shine a light on how and why these neon colors appear as you hike Dodge trails at dusk.
This program will be held outdoors, with CDC and MN Department of Health procedures in place. Please dress for the weather. Because of the group setting, face masks are required for your visit and use of hand sanitizer is encouraged.
We allow exemptions for those who have medical or other health conditions, disabilities or mental health, developmental, or behavioral needs that make it difficult to tolerate wearing a face covering. Please email or call us in advance of your program if this exemption applies to your child. We will create a plan with you that will ensure the safety of other program attendees and staff while allowing them to participate.
