Girls Explore Science: After-school Program (Series 3)

Calling all girls—let’s take science outside! In these programs, you will discover the many branches of science through hands-on activities in the great outdoors. Learn what makes science so exciting and imagine your future careers while you explore the beautiful trails of Dodge Nature Center.

Girls Explore Science is an after-school program for girls in grades 5-8 that meets once a week for five weeks.

Program Dates & Themes


January 20 - Week 1: Girls Explore Snow and Ice
It’s time for some chilly science! Drill a hole in a frozen pond and plunge a thermometer into the depths to explore the unique properties of water. Discover why snowflakes have such intricate patterns and what makes some snow good for building while other snow is not. Try different methods of winter travel to learn the physics behind sleds and snowshoes. Make sure to bundle up, you’re sure to have some good cold fun!

January 27 - Week 2: Girls Explore Winter Ecology
Do you ever wonder how scientists study animals in the wild? Find out in this exploration of winter ecology. Learn the basics of animal tracking and hike across the nature center searching for signs of Minnesota creatures. Use different techniques of scientists to study wildlife and examine the experiments happening right here at Dodge.

February 3 - Week 3: Girls Explore Climate and Sustainability
Climate change is happening, and it will have many serious effects in the years to come—but what does that term really mean? Find out in this week’s exploration of climate and sustainability. Learn about carbon footprints and how to reduce your own. See examples of renewable energy in action and explore how they work with hands-on activities. Sort out the difference between recyclable and compostable waste, and talk about what you can do to take action and fight climate change.

February 10 - Week 4: Girls Explore Mammalogy
Time for some fur-real science! Learn all about Minnesota’s mammals through outdoor games and a hands-on look at skulls and pelts. Unlock the mysteries of these animals’ teeth and identify the clues that point to what these mammals eat. Take on the role of a Minnesota mammal in winter and discover how they make it through this cold and snowy season in a game of survival strategies.

February 17 - Week 5: Girls Explore the Science of Survival
Do you think you’ve got what it takes to survive in the wilderness? Time to put that to the test! Build yourself a survival camp complete with shelter and fire. Learn how to maximize warmth and use your resources wisely. See if you can get the temperature of your shelter warmer than the air outside, and your fire big enough to roast a little treat in celebration of science well done!

COVID-19 Safety


This program will be held outdoors, with CDC and MN Department of Health procedures in place. Please dress for the weather. Because of the group setting, facemasks are required and use of hand sanitizer is encouraged.

We allow exemptions for those who have medical or other health conditions, disabilities or mental health, developmental, or behavioral needs that make it difficult to tolerate wearing a face covering. Please contact us in advance of your program if this exemption applies to your child. We will create a plan with you that will ensure the safety of other program attendees and staff while allowing them to participate.
