An event every week at 4:30pm on Wednesday, starting April 28, 2021 and repeating until May 26, 2021
Calling all girls—let’s take science outside! In these programs, you will discover many branches of science through hands-on activities in the great outdoors. Learn what makes science so exciting and imagine your future careers while you explore the beautiful trails of Dodge Nature Center.
Girls Explore Science is an after-school program for girls in grades 5-8 that meets once a week for five weeks.
April 28 – Week 1: Girls Explore Water
Splash into science in this exploration of how water shapes landscapes. Model a rushing river in the stream table and challenge yourself to build a dam that can overcome the formidable force of water. Follow the flow to find out how water moves through Dodge on its way to the mighty Mississippi. Along the way, splash in streams and dip into ponds to find out who’s living in these aquatic ecosystems.
May 5 – Week 2: Girls Explore Plants
Grow as a scientist in this in-depth look at the science of plants. Hike the nature center and learn to identify some of the common plant species found in Minnesota. Learn how introduced species impact native ecosystems and even help remove a few pesky plants. Find out all the ways plants can reproduce and test your green thumb by potting your very own plant to take home.
May 12 – Week 3: Girls Explore Herpetology
Warmer weather means it’s time to study something cold… blooded that is! Discover the world of reptiles and amphibians by meeting live snakes, turtles, toads and frogs and exploring their habitat. Learn all about what these animals need to thrive, then help feed a couple of Dodge’s ambassador herps.
May 19 – Week 4: Girls Explore Archery
With bow and arrow, take aim at the physics behind the simple machines used in archery! Use the mechanical advantage of a compound bow to shoot targets and see how well you can score. Learn a fun new skill and sport in this afternoon of archery practice.
May 26 – Week 5: Girls Explore Fire
What ignites the perfect bonfire? Turns out, a lot of science does! Learn about the physics and chemistry of fire while trying your hand at building your own fire using matches or, for a greater challenge, flint and steel! Wrap up the school year with a fun fire fiesta and campfire cookout with friends.
This program will be held outdoors, with CDC and MN Department of Health procedures in place. Please dress for the weather. Because of the group setting, face masks are required, and use of hand sanitizer is encouraged.
We allow exemptions for those who have medical or other health conditions, disabilities or mental health, developmental, or behavioral needs that make it difficult to tolerate wearing a face covering. Please contact us in advance of your program if this exemption applies to your child. We will create a plan with you that will ensure the safety of other program attendees and staff while allowing them to participate.
