Girls Explore Science: After-school Program (Series 7)

Calling all girls—let’s take science outside! In these programs, you will discover many branches of science through hands-on activities in the great outdoors. Learn what makes science so exciting and imagine your future careers while you explore the beautiful trails of Dodge Nature Center.

Girls Explore Science is an after-school program for female-identifying or non-binary youth in grades 5-8 that meets once a week for four weeks.

Scholarships are available to those who qualify.

Program Dates & Themes


November 17 – Week 1: Girls Explore Ornithology
Science takes flight in this in-depth look into the world of birds. Learn how to identify several common Minnesota bird species, hone your birding skills with our bird zip-line and our beginner birder trail! You’ll explore avian adaptations for survival and learn why some birds stay in Minnesota year-round while others fly south.

December 1 – Week 2: Girls Explore Animal Behavior
What makes animals do what they do? How do they communicate with each other? How do we communicate with them? Find out in this exploration of animal behavior! Play games, train your friends, and observe animal behavior up close in this week’s intersection of ecology and psychology.

December 8 – Week 3: Girls Explore the Science of Survival
What does it take to survive in the wild? Find out this week and put your survival skills to the test! You’ll build the ultimate shelter, start a fire with flint and steel, and learn techniques to collect safe drinking water. Learn why science can save your life in this week’s exploration of wilderness skills.

December 15 – Week 4: Girls Explore Cooking Science
Science gets delicious this week in this exploration of cooking science! Learn how cheese is made and why yeast makes bread rise. Pop some corn while learning about heat and pressure and enjoy the scrumptious scientific results!
