An event every week at 3:30pm on Wednesday, starting September 30, 2020 and repeating until November 4, 2020
Calling all girls—let’s take science outside! In these classes, you’ll dive into physics through archery and fire-building, ecology through games and live animal ambassadors, and so much more, all while exploring the habitats of Dodge. Learn what makes science so exciting, and explore what future careers might await you!
Girls Explore Science is an after-school program that meets every Wednesday, starting September 30 and ending November 4. This program is for girls in grades 5-8. Payment is only required once for this series of classes. Preregistration is required.
September 30 - Week 1: Girls Explore Ecology I: Ecosystem Biodiversity
Dive right into the first week with a BioBlitz! Visit the pond, prairie, and forest and challenge yourself to find as many living things as possible. Every plant, animal, and fungus counts in the competition. You’ll explore the importance of biodiversity to the health of an ecosystem.
October 7 - Week 2: Girls Explore Ecology II: Predator/Prey Relationships
Take on the role of the hunter (or the hunted) in a lively game of Predator/Prey! Learn how energy moves through a food web and how one change in the chain can have consequences far beyond a single species. Meet live animals and learn about the adaptations that give them an edge in their wild food webs.
October 21 - Week 3: Girls Explore Geology
Geology rocks! Compare different types of rocks and figure out how they were formed. You’ll take a step back in time and discover how glaciers influenced Minnesota’s landscape. Finish the day by learning how water continues to shape the land today. You’ll explore these concepts of geology through scientific models and exploratory hikes.
October 28 - Week 4: Girls Explore Physics I: Archery
Simple machines are anything but boring ! Learn how levers, pulleys, wheels and axles work together to make life a whole lot easier—and more entertaining. Learn to shoot a bow and arrow and find out how physics influences the world of outdoor recreation.
November 4 - Week 5: Girls Explore Physics II: Fire
Things are heating up! In this final week, you’ll investigate the concepts of mass and energy through fire. Try out different methods of starting and maintaining a fire in this hands-on exploration of the laws of conservation of mass and energy.
This program will be held outdoors, with CDC and MN Department of Health procedures in place. Please dress for the weather. Because of the group setting, face masks are required for your visit and use of hand sanitizer is encouraged.
We allow exemptions for those who have medical or other health conditions, disabilities or mental health, developmental, or behavioral needs that make it difficult to tolerate wearing a face covering. Please email or call us in advance of your program if this exemption applies to your child. We will create a plan with you that will ensure the safety of other program attendees and staff while allowing them to participate.
