Pride Outside: Spring Beginnings
An event every 2 weeks at 4:15pm on Tuesday, starting April 5, 2022 and repeating until May 31, 2022
Discover the outdoors with other Queer youth in an all-welcoming environment! You’ll gain skills through hands-on activities at the farm and gardens, science experiments, and interactions with Dodge’s educational animals.
Pride Outside is an after-school program for 5th-12th grade youth, of any sexual or gender identity, and LGBTQ+ allies. This program is offered every other Tuesday for two months. It will be a safe space—students are encouraged to come as they are. Please come dressed for the weather.
This program is free of charge, thanks to Dodge’s generous donors.
Program Dates & Themes
April 5 – Week 1: Animal Behavior
Many of us have pets. Not a lot of people know the science and reasoning behind the training of their pets. Why are they able to do what they do? Do they understand our simple commands? “Train” your friends and play games to learn about the ins and outs of operant conditioning.
April 19 – Week 2: Farm Babies
Welcome spring, the season of new beginnings, by meeting the babies in the farm and learning about modern, sustainable farming. Discuss the challenges that farmers face due to the effects of climate change.
May 3 – Week 3: Spring Flora
Learn about foraging for edible plants, gardening, and composting. Help remove invasive plant species and use them for delicious purposes.
May 17 – Week 4: Climate Science
Let’s talk about the difference between climate and weather. Use tools to gather weather data, including temperature and wind speed. Learn about climate change and the greenhouse effect through hands-on experiments.
May 31 – Week 5: Outdoor Skills
How can you survive and thrive in the wilderness? Learn how to safely and properly throw axes and shoot arrows. Use the mechanical advantage of a compound bow to shoot targets and see how well you score. Experiment with different types of knots and learn the best reasons to use each.
This program will be held mostly outdoors, with CDC and MN Department of Health procedures in place. Based on current guidelines and community levels, face masks are optional for all participants and staff. Dodge continues to monitor COVID-19 levels to determine our masking policy.
